Many special schemes and rates carry a redemption penalty. These are simply a "fine" payable to the lender should you redeem (in some cases part redeem) a mortgage during the duration of the scheme and sometimes for a period over and above the scheme date.

Ken Mortgage Advise always attempt to obtain schemes with little or no redemption periods.

However, to take advantage of the better rates available redemption periods do exist.
